Watercolor adaptation with simplification of details; historical view.

Guadix combines the Cathedral of the Incarnation, the Roman and medieval legacy and a neighborhood of houses excavated in clay hills. To organize a getaway, distinguish the walk through the city from the entrances to monuments and cave houses: some visits require a reserved session and private homes are not free-access tourist spaces.

Guadix Cathedral: history and visit

The history published by the Cathedral explains that the current building was developed between the 16th and 18th centuries. It combines Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements, with the intervention of different masters, including Diego de Siloé. The age of the diocese should not be confused with that of the building being visited.

Their sightseeing page publishes for October–March: Monday to Thursday, 11:00–14:30 and 16:00–18:00; Friday and Saturday, 11:00–19:00; Sunday, 3:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. Last access is one hour before closing. In April-September some hours change in the afternoon; check special notices for your date.

The general published rate is €7 for the Cathedral and videomapping, and €9 adding the tower. The tower includes spiral staircases and closes an hour and a half before the monument. Check modality, access conditions and open spaces before purchasing; contact: 692 574 671, catedraldeguadix@artisplendore.com.

The tourist entrance is located next to the San Torcuato doorway, on the Paseo de la Catedral. The worship schedule indicates that no tourist visits or photographs are allowed during the mass. Organize Sunday with that separation: the tourist opening may be delayed depending on the duration of the service. Flash photos or videos are also not allowed during the tourist visit.

Cave neighborhood and interpretation center

The municipal information of the neighborhood describes houses excavated by the picaores, with facades and chimneys adapted to the terrain. To learn about its history and daily life, the Cuevas de Guadix Interpretation Center is located in Plaza del Padre Poveda, s/n; telephone 958 665 569.

The Guadix Tourism visitor website publishes general admission of €5 and opening from Monday to Saturday, 9:30–14:00 and 16:00–18:30; Sunday, 9:30–2:30 p.m. Last access is half an hour before closing. Confirm these conditions when booking, especially if you find brochures or pages with other times.

For an outside walk you can take the Plaza de la Ermita Nueva and the Padre Poveda viewpoint as references. The City Council also describes the Cerro de la Bala viewpoint, which is reached through the Barranco el Armero. Check the surface and the unevenness before choosing the route with a stroller or reduced mobility.

Inhabited houses require permission from their owners. If you reserve accommodation in a cave, ask about access, ventilation, services and temperature of the specific accommodation; A general description of its thermal behavior does not guarantee 18 °C in any home throughout the year.

Alcazaba: fortress and reserved visit

The municipal file of the Alcazaba describes a medieval fortress that preserves walls and its elevated silhouette in the historic center. You can observe its silhouette from the city and organize a separate entrance to the site.

There is a visit offered by Turismo Guadix, with a general published rate of €7. The website publishes sessions on Fridays and Saturdays at 11:30 and 17:30, and on Sundays at 11:30. Confirm the session, reservation and accessibility before organizing the climb. Seeing the fortress from the city and accessing its grounds are different experiences.

Roman Theater Acci

The Roman Theater of the Iulia Gemella Acci neighborhood, on Avenida Mariana Pineda, s/n, allows you to get to know another stage of the city. The City Council identifies the stage, orchestra and stands as parts of the complex.

Guadix Tourism offers a guided tour with a general rate of €5 and sessions published on Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 and 16:00, and Sundays at 10:00. The municipal file maintains a different time for Sunday: confirm the current session and tickets with the office before moving.

How to distribute one or two days

For one day, choose an interior visit, walk through the center and dedicate another section to the Cave District. If you travel on Sunday, you can organize the caves in the morning and the Cathedral in the afternoon; Add the Roman Theater only if you have confirmed your session and can accommodate the transfers.

With two days, it distributes the Cathedral and historic center in one, and caves and a reserved visit in the other. Leave breaks and time to eat. A rural route or an outing to another location requires its own route, conditions and time; It is not an automatic extension of the urban walk.

Arrival and transfers

Renfe identifies the Guadix station on Avenida Estación Ferrocarril, with Long and Medium Distance services. To walk, adapt the route to the slopes, the expected heat or cold, and the effort of your group. Bring water, protection for the weather forecast and appropriate footwear.

Eat and prepare reserves

The municipal gastronomy collects breadcrumbs, choto with garlic, porridge, sustentos and pot of San Antón; among the sweets, felipes, pestiños and butter cakes. Ask about the menu, kitchen hours and dietary needs of the chosen establishment; A free tapa is not guaranteed with every drink.

The municipal tourism page and the visit website allow you to prepare your trip.
