Perched high in the rugged mountains of La Alpujarra, roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Granada, sits one of Spain’s most curious, viral, and whimsical destinations: Soportújar ↗, the ‘Witch Village’ (El Pueblo de las Brujas).

With its giant iron witches riding broomsticks, Slavic folklore Baba Yaga chicken-legged cabin, giant crawling black spiders, dragon fountains, and wishing cauldrons nestled among traditional whitewashed Berber alleys, Soportújar is a spellbinding day trip for families, photographers, and travelers looking for something magical.

1. Why is Soportújar Associated with Witches?

The origins of Soportújar’s witch connection date back to the late 16th century. Following the expulsion of the Moors after the Alpujarra rebellion, King Philip II repopulated the deserted mountain villages with Christian families from Galicia and Northern Spain. These Galician settlers brought with them ancient Celtic folklore, herbal healing traditions, legends of meigas (witches), and protective incantations (queimadas). Neighboring villages began calling the people of Soportújar brujos (sorcerers), a moniker the village embraced centuries later to reinvent itself as a thriving open-air theme village.

2. The Magical Trail: Cosa vedere a the Village

As you wander through the steep cobblestone alleys and under traditional wooden tinaos (covered passageways), look out for these iconic landmarks:

  • The Cave of the Witch Eye (Cueva del Ojo de la Bruja): At the village entrance, peer inside a rocky hollow to spot a life-sized animatronic sorceress mixing a bubbling potion.
  • Baba Yaga’s Cottage (Casita de Baba Yaga): A whimsical wooden fairytale cabin standing on giant eagle legs, straight from Eastern European Slavic mythology.
  • The Giant Iron Spider (La Araña Gigante): A colossal wrought-iron arachnid crawling up a whitewashed stone wall.
  • The Dragon Fountain (Fuente del Dragón): A stone fountain sculpted with dragon scales where travelers drink fresh mountain spring water.
  • Mirador del Embrujo & The Wishing Cauldron: An open terrace overlooking the Mediterranean and mountains, featuring two life-sized witches casting spells over a bronze cauldron.
  • The Narrowest Alley in Spain (Callejón Mágico): Measuring just 48 centimeters wide, walking through this narrow passage is a fun challenge!

3. Come Arrivare & Parking Advice (2026)

  • By Car: From Granada, take the A-44 highway south, exit towards Lanjarón (A-348), and follow the scenic mountain switchbacks past Órgiva to Soportújar (approx. 1 hour).
  • Parking Notice: Traffic inside the narrow village streets is strictly prohibited for non-residents. Several municipal terraced parking lots are located right at the town entrance (parking fee ~2.00 € to 3.00 € for all-day parking).
