Declared an event of International Tourist Interest, the Holy Week of Granada (Semana Santa) is one of the most aesthetically stunning, solemn, and emotionally intense religious and cultural celebrations in the world. What makes Granada’s Easter unique across Andalusia is its breathtaking architectural backdrop: centuries-old baroque statues passing through the narrow cobblestone alleys of the Albaicín, climbing into the hills of Sacromonte amidst bonfires and flamenco song, and descending through the cypress forest of the Alhambra under moonlight.

In this 2026 visitor guide, we present the four must-see processions, day-by-day highlights, strategic viewing spots, and vital mobility tips in the historic center.

The 4 Unmissable Processions of Granada

1. El Cristo de los Gitanos (Holy Wednesday / Miércoles Santo)

The most impassioned and popular procession in Granada. The Christ of the Gypsies and the Virgin of Sacromonte make their way through the city center in the afternoon and begin their nocturnal ascent up the Camino del Sacromonte after midnight. Outside the whitewashed cave homes, local families light massive bonfires, sing heart-wrenching saetas, and dance bulerías in front of the floats until sunrise.

2. El Silencio (Night of Holy Thursday to Good Friday)

The haunting, solemn counterpoint to the celebration. Precisely at midnight, all streetlights along the Carrera del Darro and Plaza Nueva are extinguished into complete darkness. In pitch black, illuminated only by four tall torches, the 17th-century Christ of Mercy glides beside the Darro river beneath the illuminated silhouette of the Alhambra. The only sound from tens of thousands of gathered spectators is the monotonous, mournful beat of a muffled drum.

3. Santa María de la Alhambra (Holy Saturday / Sábado Santo)

The only brotherhood headquartered within the fortified walls of the Alhambra itself. The Virgin Mary’s silver canopy is a masterfully crafted miniature reproduction of the Court of the Lions. Watching the brotherhood descend down through the monumental Gate of Justice (Puerta de la Justicia) into the forested hillside is one of the artistic highlights of Spanish religious heritage.

4. Las Chías and Soledad de San Jerónimo (Good Friday)

A living 16th-century tradition. The procession is led by the enigmatic Chías: hooded penitents draped in black velvet who play sorrowful long brass horns and muffled kettle drums announcing the burial of Christ.

Day-by-Day Highlights for Visitors

  • Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos): The joyful morning procession of La Borriquilla with thousands of children waving palm fronds, followed by La Santa Cena in the evening.
  • Good Friday at 15:00 h (Campo del Príncipe): Tens of thousands gather in absolute silence at the foot of the Christ of the Favors statue in the Realejo quarter to observe three minutes of prayer at the hour of Christ’s death and ask for three personal favors.
  • Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurrección): The delightful Facundillos procession, where children carry ceramic bells that ring cheerily through the streets of the Cathedral.

Practical Tips for International Visitors

  1. Footwear: Historic cobblestones (empedrado granadino) can be slippery and tiring; wear sturdy, comfortable flat walking shoes.
  2. Traffic Restrictions: Starting at 16:00 h each afternoon, Gran Vía and Reyes Católicos are completely closed to vehicles. Use the Metro of Granada, which runs 24 hours non-stop during key Easter days.
  3. Respect the Processions: When crossing a street, only do so at designated police-supervised crosswalks and never walk between rows of penitents (nazarenos).
