Top Points of Interest in Gorafe (2 dedicated guides)

Gorafe brings together archeology and landscape in the Gor River Valley. To organize the visit, separate the Megalith Interpretation Center, the dolmen tours and an exit to the badlands of Los Coloraos: they have different accesses and needs.

Megalithism Interpretation Center: start with the CIM

The CIM of Gorafe is the documented resource to understand the megalithic heritage. The Provincial Council highlights its educational function and publishes the telephone number 616 944 605. Check the passes, reservation, price and opening for your date before you go.

When consulting the CIM, specify the pass you are interested in, how long it lasts, how it is reserved and if there are discounts applicable to your group. If you are traveling with children or need step-free access, also ask about the interior route and the conditions of the chosen activity.

Megalithic Park and dolmens of the Gor River Valley

A dolmen is a collective prehistoric tomb. The heritage file of the Provincial Council explains the successive burials and recommends first visiting the CIM to interpret the structures and choose a route.

The same source identifies the Conquí dolmens, next to the GR-6100, among those with the best access. The complex is spread across the landscape: not all the tombs are next to the road or accessible to people with mobility difficulties. Ask for a specific itinerary and check its pending and sign.

The park card indicates free admission, but that does not confirm that the CIM or a guided excursion is free. Keep those services separate when calculating your budget.

Los Coloraos: landscape and routes through the badlands

The official map of the Geopark places the Mirador de los Coloraos in Gorafe and describes its panoramic view over the central sector of the desert. Do not confuse it with a view of the urban area or with immediate access from the town.

The catalog identifies the Desierto Gorafe Route, PR-A 426. Before following it, get the complete sheet or consult a guide to know the distance, gradient, starting point and condition of the paths. The presence in the catalog does not prove that any vehicle can travel the tracks.

If you prefer an organized outing, the Geopark directory includes Geopark Granada, with hiking and 4×4 activities; telephone 608 173 706. Check the route, duration, difficulty, price and places for your date.

The town and its cisterns

The urban walk can complement the archeology and the landscape. The Tourist Board collects the Arab cisterns of Gorafe, hydraulic infrastructures dated to the 11th century. Confirm its location and access before including an interior visit or a tour outside the town.

The Desert House

The directory of collaborating companies identifies La Casa del Desierto, managed by Servicios Gorafe S. L., as a proposal for accommodation and rural tourism in Camino de la Meseta, number 6. It publishes the telephone number 654 300 419.

It is a private establishment: check the reservation, access and conditions before approaching. Organize the arrival with the accommodation and distinguish its services from visits to the megalithic park.

Astronomical observation

The Los Coloraos Astronomical Complex is included in the Geopark with scheduled activities and private visits. It is in Llano del Cocón, polygon 3, plot 31; telephone 669 445 830 and email info@turismoastronomico.org.

Confirm session, reservation, return transportation and weather conditions. An astronomical activity does not equate to free access to the complex nor does it guarantee observations every night.

How to organize a day or a weekend

For a first visit, book the CIM and then choose a sector of dolmens suitable for your group. Add the urban walk if travel and openings allow it. If your priority is Los Coloraos, organize that departure separately, with an itinerary that includes the return.

A weekend allows archeology and landscape to be distributed on different days. Astronomy can be added if there is a confirmed session. With small children or reduced mobility, specify access to each stop; Not all the territory supports the same effort.

Access, transportation and preparation

The GR-6100 is a documented reference to access the megalithic landscape. The IAPH identifies this road and the Gor River canyon in its record of the Llano de Olivares. Calculate the itinerary to the specific meeting point and check incidents and restrictions on the slopes.

If you depend on public transport, check with the operator how to get there from Guadix, the exact stop, the days of service and the return time. Arrange the last leg before booking activities: arriving in Guadix does not automatically resolve access to Gorafe.

Bring water, sun protection and appropriate footwear for the tour. Check the forecast and warnings before leaving; If you are looking for evening light, also calculate the time and the return route.

Where to sleep and organize meals

The provincial directory includes Cueva La Candela in Castillo Alto, 19 C; telephone 661 890 955. Check directly availability, booking conditions, access and distance to the starting point of your activities.

Confirm where to eat and the kitchen hours for your date before hitting the trails. To guide the visit, the Geopark tourist information service publishes 615 669 732 and turismo@geoparquedegranada.com.
