Church of the Villa, fortress and El Centinela

The municipal monument file places the old Church of the Villa in the 16th century, on the remains of the Arab fortress, and relates it to Diego de Siloé. In the enclosure you can see defensive elements preserved next to the church.

The church houses the Interpretation Center of the Last Frontier of Al-Andalus, El Centinela. Its exhibition deals with the medieval past, the fortifications of the West and the evolution of Montefrío, with areas in the church and the tower.

El Centinela is open Tuesday to Friday, 10:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, 10:30–14:00 and 16:00–18:00; Monday closed. From June to September, the weekend afternoon slot changes to 4:30–6:30 p.m. Check the rate, exceptions and access to the different floors for your date.

You can go up on foot through San Sebastián, Santiago and the Arrabal; The City Council classifies this access as medium-high difficulty. Another access passes through the Old Cemetery, Gracia and Arco. Tourism indicates free public parking in the Old Cemetery and reserves the vehicle climb to the entrance of El Centinela for people with reduced mobility. If you need this option, check the authorization and access to the rooms and the bell tower before going.

La Encarnación: the round church of the town

The municipal description attributes the Church of the Incarnation to Domingo Lois de Monteagudo and places its construction between 1786 and 1802. It is neoclassical, circular in plan and inspired by Agrippa’s Pantheon in Rome.

La Encarnación and the Iglesia de la Villa are different buildings. To enter the Incarnation, consult its opening and respect the acts of worship; organize the climb to the Villa with El Centinela’s own schedule.

Viewpoints: various perspectives, different accesses

The municipal directory of viewpoints allows you to choose according to the perspective you are looking for:
