Where is Purullena and what plan to choose
The City Council places Purullena in the central-western part of the Guadix region. The municipality includes the towns of Purullena and El Bejarín. Use the specific visiting point when preparing your trip: the town museum and the Almagruz complex do not share an address.
Organize a first day with the urban walk, the museum you have reserved and the food. Add Almagruz or a route around the area only if your schedules and trips fit. Prioritize the visits you have confirmed and leave room between them.
St. Martin’s Church
The municipal record identifies the parish church as San Martín, located to the north of the town, on an elevated square on Hornos Street. It describes a Mudejar temple with a nave and a rectangular floor plan.
Inside, the coffered ceiling made in 1558 by Baltasar de la Hoya stands out, according to the same source. To see it, check with the parish about the visiting hours and their compatibility with acts of worship.
If you need step-free access, check the specific entrance and the route to the church. The elevated position of the square makes it advisable to prepare the walk according to the mobility of the group.
La Inmaculada Cave Museum: visit, price and contact
The museum website presents a current cave, an ancient one and an ethnographic exhibition. It is a way to get to know the excavated house and the objects of daily life without entering private homes.
Its contact page locates the museum at Carretera de Granada, 80, 18519 Purullena, and publishes an entrance fee of 5 euros per person. The advertised times change depending on the season:
| La Inmaculada Cave Museum | Published schedule |
|---|---|
| winter | 8:30–18:00 |
| spring and autumn | 8:30–19:00 |
| summer | 8:30–20:00 |
The museum publishes the notice “Closed on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.” When booking, confirm if it closes all day on Wednesday, how the afternoon closure applies, and the time of your date.
You can consult at 646 556 247, 958 690 181 or cuevamuseo@gmail.com. Ask about duration, conditions for minors and groups, mobility, possibility of photographs and payment method. Request confirmation of the reservation before traveling.
Almagruz: interpretation of the troglodyte habitat
The manager of Almagruz describes three rooms excavated in the clay, dedicated to the interpretation of the habitat and artistic techniques. His projects include EmbarrArte, fresco painting, work with esparto grass and the silk cycle. Check which workshop can be adapted to the participants and ages of your group.
The Granada Geopark file locates the complex at Cortijo Almagruz, exit at kilometer 286 of the A-92. Publish the telephone numbers 658 923 971 and 685 928 812, and the email almagruz@gmail.com.
The program published by the Geopark includes visits and combinations of activities with different durations:
| Activity in Almagruz | Published duration |
|---|---|
| Guided general troglodyte route | Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes |
| General troglodyte route and ethnographic workshop | 3 hours |
| General troglodyte route and Fardes-Alhama badlands landscape | 3 hours |
Rates vary depending on age, group, content and season. Request a quote for the chosen activity, indicating participants, ages, date and interests. The program requires pre-booking and center confirmation; The visit begins at the entrance of the farmhouse. Agree on the meeting point when confirming.
The resort also offers cave accommodation. Agreeing on a cultural visit and booking a stay are different procedures: confirm with the manager what each service includes.
The Fardes landscape and the excavated caves
The description of Almagruz in the Geopark explains that its artificial caves are located on an escarpment of sediments of river origin and links the route to the badlands landscape of the Fardes valley. The gullies and excavated houses are references to understand this environment.
To walk, choose a guided activity or an itinerary with proven start, difficulty, access and return. Bring water, appropriate footwear and protection from the sun, and check the weather conditions. Only access caves authorized for visits and check the permitted use of the slopes.
Cave houses can be inhabited homes. Respect doors and private areas, and ask permission before photographing residents or interiors. A visit to a museum or concerted center allows you to learn about this heritage with defined access conditions.
What to eat in Purullena
The municipal gastronomy page mentions paprika corn flour porridge, migas, rice with snails and peaches. They are references to ask about the local offer, without ensuring that any restaurant serves them all year round.
Confirm menu, opening, prices and options for allergies or diets before booking. If you combine museum, workshop and food, leave room for travel.
Transportation, families and mobility
To arrive by car, check the exact destination of the museum or Almagruz with an updated map and the manager’s instructions. Check where you can park and add the walk to the entrance.
For municipal information, the City Council publishes the telephone number 958 690 137 and the email aytopurullena@gmail.com, with headquarters at calle Horno, 1, 18519 Purullena. Direct reservations and price inquiries to the museum or center you are going to visit.
If you travel by public transport, verify operator, stop, date and last return before booking visits. Also check the transfer between the stop and each visiting space.
With minors, ask about recommended ages and duration of the workshops. For a wheelchair or stroller, check the slopes, pavement, doors, steps and toilets of each space before booking.
