History: two different Capitulations

The municipal history places the construction of Santa Fe in the context of the siege of Granada in 1491. The layout of the historic center preserves the relationship between the main streets, the gates and the old parade ground. The current buildings incorporate subsequent transformations; Not everything you see corresponds to the 15th century camp.

It is convenient to distinguish two documents: the Capitulations for the surrender and delivery of Granada, of November 25, 1491, and the Capitulations of Santa Fe, of April 17, 1492, agreed between the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus for their expedition. The second date is not that of the delivery of Granada, which took place on January 2, 1492.

Next to the monument to Christopher Columbus, in front of the Puerta de Jaén or Belén, you will find a reproduction of the text of the Capitulations and the plaque of kilometer zero of the Discovery. To see the exhibition «From Santa Fe to the Indies. The first voyage of Christopher Columbus”, consult the Tourism visits.

The four monumental doors

The municipal heritage guide identifies the doors of Granada, Jaén, Seville and Loja or Jerez. After losing their defensive function, they incorporated chapels. The Loja gate was demolished in 1912 and rebuilt in 1952: the four current gates are not four intact medieval constructions.

Door Location and chapel What to observe
pomegranate This; Virgin of the Rosary. Rebuilt in 1698; Baroque ornamentation of the chapel.
Jaén or de los Carros North; Virgin of Bethlehem. Image attributed to José Risueño y Santa Escala.
Seville South; Our Lady of Sorrows. Remodeled in 1798; Aurora altarpiece.
Loja or Jerez West; Virgin of Carmen. Founders plaque; demolished in 1912 and rebuilt in 1952.

Use the Tourism map to explore them from the square and adapt the tour to your arrival point. Seeing an arch from the street and accessing its chapel are different visits. Check opening or possibility of a guided tour before organizing your day around the interiors.

Plaza de España, Encarnación and civil buildings

The municipal heritage information describes the current church of La Encarnación as a neoclassical temple from the late 18th century, which replaced the previous collegiate church. The Town Hall has a neo-Mudejar façade. The Pósito had functions of storage and administration of cereals; The old Royal House is identified with the Rectoral House.

The complex allows us to distinguish religious and civil heritage around the square. To enter the church, check with the Parish of La Encarnación, which publishes the telephone number 958 440 103. Their parish office hours are not equivalent to tourist visits. Respect the celebrations and ask if it is possible to visit the chapels.

The municipal guide also includes the hermitage of Señor de la Salud. You can incorporate it into the tour if you have time, checking its opening to visit the interior.

Institute of America and guided tours

The directory of museums of the Junta de Andalucía identifies the Instituto de América–Centro Damián Bayón in Plaza de España, next to the Encarnación, and publishes the telephone number 958 513 004.

The hours published by the directory are Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; Closed Monday. Check with the center which rooms and exhibitions you can visit, their access and the time of your date.

The Tourist Office offers the “Discovering Santa Fe” visit and dramatized proposals through the historic center and the exhibition on Columbus’s first voyage. You can request information and reserve at 677 987 858 or at turismo@santafe.es. Check modality, duration, price, participants, accessibility and meeting point.

Pionono and lunch stop

The municipal page of the pionono relates this small cake with Ceferino Isla, 1897 and the tribute to Pius IX. It is the explanation that Tourism of Santa Fe offers about its local tradition. The same page includes several workshops and confectioneries, which allows you to prepare your purchase without presenting a single brand like the entire offer in the municipality.

Check schedule, price, ingredients and conservation with the establishment. If you have dietary needs, ask about the preparation and possible allergens before purchasing.

The municipal tourist directory brings together restaurants, bars and accommodation. Use it to locate options and verify opening, menu and reservation. If you are staying in Santa Fe to visit Granada, also calculate the transfer and the last return before choosing accommodation.

Dehesa de Santa Fe: a separate exit

The Junta de Andalucía identifies the Dehesa de Santa Fe as a peri-urban park and municipal public forest to the south of the municipality. Tourism proposes trails and walks through the Dehesa and the Vega.

La Dehesa is about 5 kilometers from the urban center, according to Tourism, and has recreational areas and a viewpoint over La Vega, the Sierra de Huétor and Sierra Nevada. Organize the trip at the beginning, check the state of the road and current restrictions, bring water and appropriate footwear and respect crops and properties. The presence of barbecues requires checking the rules and restrictions on the use of fire for your date.

Tourism describes an adapted circular trail. If you need an accessible route, check its sections, surface, access to the start and current status before leaving.

How to get there and prepare to return

To travel between Granada and Santa Fe, consult the lines 0140 Granada–Santa Fe and 0240 Granada–Santa Fe–Chauchina–Fuente Vaqueros in the Consortium. The 0245 Granada–Airport allows you to connect Santa Fe with the airport, but its form states that it cannot pick up travelers in Granada to Santa Fe or in Santa Fe to Granada. For this route, use the corresponding metropolitan lines.

Lines 0140 and 0240 depart from Rector Marín Ocete, near the Granada train station. In Santa Fe, the return includes the Santa Fe City Hall stop. Consult schedules and notices from the Consortium for your day, direction and stop, as well as fare and last return service. If you arrive at the Granada bus station, prepare the connection to a stop on the chosen service.

The Consortium identifies lines 0140 and 0240 as not adapted to people with reduced mobility; Consult with the operator the possibilities for your trip before organizing it. By car, locate the parking lot and follow the center’s signs and restrictions. For wheelchairs or strollers, see also pavement, crossings and interior access.

Tourism information to organize the day

You can contact Tourism at 958 513 110 and at turismo@santafe.es. The published hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. The services directory locates the office at Calle Isabel la Católica, number 7; The contact page indicates section 4–12 of that street and the Capitulations website publishes Plaza de España, 2. Confirm where you should go when arranging a visit or collecting information.

For a first visit, combine a walk through the square and doors with a confirmed interior and a stop for lunch. Add the Dehesa only if you have organized its access and have time.
