Valderrubio and Fuente Vaqueros: two different places

Lorca was born in Fuente Vaqueros on June 5, 1898, as stated in the Fuente Vaqueros City Council. The birthplace is there. The Valderrubio house corresponds to the family’s period of rural residence and summers.

The history published by the Valderrubio House-Museum explains that the family had their rural residence here between 1905 and 1909 and continued to spend the summers until 1926. The current building was built on the foundations of the previous home.

Its distribution unites housing and agricultural work spaces, with a patio, work quarters and the landlord’s house. The old stable is used as a theater and temporary exhibition hall. The rooms recreate the daily life of the time and display items related to the work and trades of the rural environment.

The exhibition of the House of Bernarda Alba presents the courtyard of the well, documents about the people who inspired characters, symbols of the work and rooms dedicated to Poncia, Bernarda and Adela. The visit relates the documentation of Frasquita Alba’s family with the characters and symbols of Lorca’s drama.

Reading or remembering the plot before you go can help you follow the presentation. If you are traveling with minors, ask about the content and format most appropriate for their age.

Modalities, duration and published prices

The municipal website Valderrubio in Lorca is the official way to reserve the houses. The options published in the consultation of October 6, 2026 were:

Modality What’s included Published reference
Guide of both houses Lorca House-Museum and Bernarda Alba House, in Spanish. 2 hours; Normal entry €10/person and reduced €8/person.
Self-guided tour of Lorca Only Lorca House-Museum, with audio guide application. 1 hour; Single entry €8/person.
Dramatized by Bernarda Alba Activity managed by a company; own program. Check date, content and rate in your reservations section.

The guide sheet establishes the usual pass at 11:00, until approximately 13:00, with a minimum of two people. If you go alone, indicate that you contact us to receive information. The published capacity since September 2026 is 30 people. The guide sheet includes a reduced rate for those under 18, over 65 and people with recognized functional diversity, as well as conditions for groups. Check the supporting documents, the possible free payment and the final amount of your modality before paying.

The usual guided tour is not carried out on days with a dramatized tour. A dramatized one and a guided one are different programs; Check if you need to book the Lorca House-Museum add-on separately.

The self-guided route publishes passes from Tuesday to Friday at 9:00, 10:00 and 13:00 and, for Saturdays and corresponding opening days, at 10:00 and 13:00. The audio guide is offered in Spanish, English and French. The calendar may vary in summer: check your date pass and confirm the local time in Valderrubio with the manager if the form shows “Europe/London”.

Prior reservation, Sundays and accessibility

All visits require prior reservation. The houses announce opening from Tuesday to Saturday and only on Sundays marked as available on the calendar. They are closed on Mondays and certain holidays or days of cultural activity. To go on a Sunday, choose an available date on the calendar of your modality.

Before paying, check the date, method and conditions: the conditions consulted on October 6 indicate that the amounts paid are not refunded. If you need to change the day, contact in advance to discuss the possibility of moving the visit.

The website warns that the houses are not fully accessible, although they have some elements, such as ramps, to visit ground floors. If you use a wheelchair or need to avoid stairs, contact beforehand and specify what spaces and modality you can enjoy.

The guided tour asks you to arrive a few minutes early. Its rules restrict bulky bags or backpacks and the recording or photography of audiovisual content. Organize luggage and transfers to reach the starting point on time.

Poetic walk and surroundings of Cubillas

The Valderrubio City Council describes a poetic walk with twelve ceramic panels that connects the House-Museum, the Plaza de la Iglesia and part of Calle Real towards the Casa de Bernarda Alba. You can complete the interior visit with a quiet reading of the panels.

The catalog also includes the Casa de los Aperos and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Purificación. Check which auxiliary spaces are included in your ticket and confirm the opening of the church.

To go out into the rural environment, the same catalog presents the Caminos de Vascos next to the Cubillas, towards the Daimuz plain. Ask for local information about access and road conditions. Respect crops and private property, bring water and adapt the walk to the conditions of the day. The old Fuente de la Carrura is described as missing; Organize the walk by bringing your own water.

How to get there and organize a day

The house arrival information identifies bus lines 335 and 336 from Granada and places a nearby stop on Calle Real, next to the Casiano bar. Before traveling, check services, stops and return for your date at the Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano de Granada. Also check the change notices and the last departure that allows you to return.

If you go by car, use the starting point of your confirmation and check parking without blocking neighborhood accesses. To eat, check the opening, menu and prices with the town’s establishments; Agree on where to eat based on the end time of your visit.

One proposal is to book both houses and add the poetic walk before or after the pass. If you also want to visit the birthplace of Fuente Vaqueros, prepare another reservation and travel: there are two museums with independent tickets and conditions.

The directory of museums of the Board publishes for the House-Museum the telephone number 958 454 217 and calle Iglesia, 20. For municipal information, the City Council indicates 958 454 466, valderrubio@dipgra.es and calle Veleta, 24. Consult the official calendar for visits.
