The festival traces its roots back to 1625, when the residents of the San Lázaro quarter erected an alabaster cross and decorated it with flowers, songs, and poetry. Over the centuries, the tradition evolved into a grand citywide competition.
Every authentic cross display features traditional Granadino elements:
- The Golden Apple with a Scissors (Pero y Tijeras): Look closely at the base of every cross and you will spot a golden apple with an open pair of scissors stuck into it.
