Directly opposite the monumental stone facade of Granada Cathedral and the Royal Chapel stands one of Andalusia’s most unexpected artistic gems: the Centro José Guerrero. Dedicated to the celebrated painter José Guerrero (1914–1991), this museum brings the vibrant, energetic world of mid-century Abstract Expressionism and the New York School right into the heart of Granada’s historic core.
Housed in a magnificently restored 19th-century bourgeois palace, the center offers an exquisite contrast between ancient Moorish and Catholic architecture and cutting-edge contemporary international art.
1. Who Was José Guerrero?
Born in Granada in 1914, José Guerrero emigrated to the United States in the late 1940s, becoming a prominent member of the historic New York School of Abstract Expressionism alongside figures such as Mark Rothko, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning. His canvases are characterized by intense, luminous color fields, bold structural gestures, and deeply emotive chromatic tensions.
2. The Museum Collection & Temporary Exhibits
The center houses the most comprehensive public collection of Guerrero’s works in existence, donated by his family. Over four floors of pristine white gallery spaces, visitors follow his chronological evolution:
- Early Figurative and Biomorphic Works: Influenced by Picasso, Matisse, and early surrealism.
- The New York Period: Dynamic action painting and deep chromatic experiments with blacks, crimson, and ochre.
- The Phosphorescences (Fosforescencias): Guerrero’s celebrated series from the 1970s and 80s exploring intense, luminous color boundaries.
- Top-Floor Architecture Viewpoint: The top-floor gallery features panoramic glass windows framing dramatic close-up views of the soaring buttresses and bell tower of the Cathedral.

- Opening Hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 to 14:00 and 16:30 to 21:00; Sundays and holidays from 10:30 to 14:00. Closed Mondays.
