Water was sacred in Islamic Granada: not only essential for physical survival and ritual purification before prayer, but celebrated as a sensory symbol of Paradise. Deep in the heart of the upper Albaicín (Placeta del Cristo de las Azucenas) lies the Aljibe del Rey (The King’s Cistern), the largest and most impressive historic subterranean cistern in the city.
1. Masterpiece of Hydraulic Engineering
Constructed in the 11th century under the Zirid dynasty, this monumental vaulted chamber held up to 300,000 liters (80,000 gallons) of fresh drinking water channeled directly from the Ainadamar spring in Alfacar. Its four stone naves supported by semi-circular arches and thick lime-plastered walls kept the water perpetually cold and sterile.
2. Water Interpretation Center
Today, the cistern and its surrounding carmen house the Centro de Interpretación del Agua, explaining the ingenious canal and irrigation network (acequias) that transformed arid hillside terrain into flourishing garden palaces.
