Perched at an altitude ranging between 1,476 and 1,600 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of colossal Sierra Nevada, Trevélez is proudly celebrated as one of the highest villages in Spain. World-renowned for its exquisite cured mountain ham (Jamón de Trevélez with Protected Geographical Indication), crisp alpine air, and crystalline trout river, it is a haven for mountaineers, gourmets, and lovers of traditional Andalusia.
The Three Quarters of Trevélez (Barrio Bajo, Medio & Alto)
Trevélez is divided into three distinct stepped neighborhoods cascading down the mountain:
- Barrio Bajo (Lower Quarter, 1,476 m): The commercial entrance where visitors find traditional ham-curing bodegas, craft shops selling leather and textiles, and riverside restaurants.
- Barrio Medio (Middle Quarter): A peaceful residential area with Mudéjar fountains, whitewashed stone cottages, and blooming geranium flowerpots.
- Barrio Alto (Upper Quarter, 1,600 m): The oldest and most authentic quarter. Here, sheep and mule bells still echo through steep cobblestone alleys, and the views across the Trevélez River canyon and surrounding peaks are majestic.
Why Jamón de Trevélez IGP is World-Famous
Since 1862, when Queen Isabella II granted Trevélez the royal privilege of bearing the royal stamp on its hams, this mountain village has been recognized as Spain’s premier natural curing center. The secret lies in its unique microclimate: icy, dry winds blowing straight off the glaciers of Mulhacén and Alcazaba, allowing hams to cure naturally without chemical preservatives, using only sea salt and time (14 to 24 months).
Many traditional drying houses (secaderos), such as Jamones Vallejo and Jamones Antonio Álvarez, offer guided cellar tours and tastings.
High Mountain Hiking Trails from Trevélez
- Ascent to Mulhacén (3,482 m): The classic southern route to Spain’s highest mainland peak starts from Trevélez via Siete Lagunas. A demanding but unforgettable 8-hour alpine trek.
- Ruta de Siete Lagunas: A spectacular trek to a glacial hanging valley at 3,000 meters altitude with crystal-clear alpine tarns, waterfalls, and native alpine wildflowers.
- Sendero Sulayr (GR-240): Stages of the legendary circular trail around Sierra Nevada pass directly through the village.
