History, legends and recreations: how to understand the town

The history published by the City Council relates Soportújar with a farmhouse in the Taha de Órgiva and explains the repopulation after the Alpujarras War of the 16th century. It also links the name of the municipality with the arcades or tinaos, characteristic passageways of its urban fabric.

The fountains and sculptures along the route recreate stories and legends. The House of Baba Yaga is inspired by Slavic folklore and is part of the current tourism project. Municipal history documents the repopulation with 27 families from other regions after the Alpujarras War of 1568–1571.

The municipal description of the House of Baba Yaga expressly distinguishes legend from recreation. This difference allows you to enjoy the tour without confusing a thematic installation with an old construction or a documented event.

What to see during the walk

Dragon Fountain

The municipal route proposes going down from Plaza de Abastos along Estación Street to the Dragon Fountain. The association of its water with fertility belongs to the legend of the facility; To drink, use water whose potability is indicated.

Baba Yaga’s House

The same route describes a recreation of the house supported on chicken legs in the upper part of the town, inspired by the character from Slavic folklore. Check the itinerary on the local map and respect the installation’s instructions to observe or photograph it.

With children, explain that it is a story character. Adapt the visit to their age and do not assume that all figures are designed to be climbed on. Respect neighbors’ homes, doors and steps.

Viewpoint with the witches fountain

The municipal record of the viewpoint identifies a fountain with two witches, an expert and her apprentice, preparing a potion in a cauldron. Describes views of the surroundings and neighboring towns such as Carataunas or Cáñar. Visibility depends on the conditions of the day.

Alternate stops with breaks and leave home entrances free. The viewpoint allows you to place the town in the Alpujarra landscape; The width of the views depends on the visibility of the day.

Expand the tour with local information

The local page of the sightseeing tour brings together the head of Baba Yaga, the Cave of the Witch’s Eye, the Enchanted Bridge, the Age of Covens, the Enchanted Serpent of Shed Street, the Dream-Weaving Spider and the Magic Broom. Consult the local map to locate the facilities and ask about the interiors.

The town preserves white houses, tinaos and narrow streets. Walk the passages respecting the houses and choose an alternative if a step is uncomfortable for your group. To link the town with the facilities on the outskirts, check distances, slopes and access at the local level.

O Sel Ling: official hours and conditions

The O Sel Ling visit page publishes a free visit without reservation, within the following hours:

Period Visiting hours
June to October 18, included. 17:00–19:30.
October 19 to May, included. 15:30–18:00.

The visit passes by sacred objects such as the prayer wheel, the stupa, the Medicine Buddha and the statue of Green Tara. The center requests silence, respect for private areas and objects, dogs on a leash and no fire, candles, incense or tobacco. Check possible changes before the trip.

According to your access information, the last six kilometers are a forest track. The visitors page warns that it is unpaved and in poor condition. Check the condition and suitability of the vehicle before getting on.

The information from the center places the signposted detour to O Sel Ling in front of the Eternal Father hermitage, between Soportújar and Pampaneira. From there, follow the trail signs to your parking lot. Bring water and appropriate footwear; in summer, head protection. During the visit, remain silent and avoid climbing the sacred objects to take photographs.

The center notes that it does not offer transportation for visitors; The collection that you describe from the hermitage of the Eternal Father corresponds to people who make a retreat. Arriving by bus to the area does not solve the transfer to the center. Consult the operator for stop, service and return, and organize the lift separately.

To consult access, mobility or schedule changes, you can call 958 343 134 or 669 863 676. The published telephone service is from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:00. For questions about the visit, the center’s website indicates coordinacionespiritual@oseling.com. Ask about stairs and route conditions if you travel with a wheelchair or stroller, and respect the areas reserved for pick-ups.

Parking and getting around Soportújar

Before arriving, check with the Town Hall about the available spaces, access restrictions, fares and pedestrian routes from the parking lot. Follow local signs and directions. Confirm the price before parking and leave room to search for a space; Availability at a specific time is not guaranteed.

Circulation through narrow streets requires preparing access without depending on reaching each point along the route by car. Do not park blocking entrances, curves or passages. If you are driving a large vehicle, check where you can maneuver and park before entering.

For bus, confirm with the operator which stop serves the town, remaining walking distance and last return. The approximate transportation schedule published by an accommodation or a retreat center does not replace consulting the service on your date.

Visit with children, stroller or reduced mobility

Organize a short tour and extend it according to the group. Check stairs, slopes, road surfaces and alternatives before choosing stops, especially with a stroller or reduced mobility.

Bring water and appropriate footwear and allow time to eat, rest and take photographs. If you add O Sel Ling, reserve time for the access track, the visit within its schedule and the return.

What to eat and how to complete the day

The municipal gastronomic page includes an Alpujarreño dish, fennel stew, migas and fried vegetables. They are references to ask about local cuisine, without ensuring that each dish is available throughout the year.

The same page mentions Taberna Romero and El Correillo. Directly check opening, menu, prices, reservation and food needs.

If you want to expand your excursion, consult our guides to Pampaneira and the Poqueira ravine. Plan road times and access times for your date, without automatically adding all destinations to a single day.
