Situated at the northern gateway of the lush Lecrín-Tal ↗ just 25 kilometers south of Granada, Dúrcal is a vibrant mountain town celebrated for its dramatic river gorges, historic architectural ironwork, natural warm springs, and flourishing citrus orchards. Overlooked by the high peaks of Sierra Nevada, Dúrcal is the adventure capital of the valley.
The Iconic Puente de Lata (Tin Bridge)
Dúrcal’s most famous landmark is the spectacular Puente de Lata, an impressive 19th-century iron railway bridge spanning 200 meters across the deep canyon of the Dúrcal River. Originally constructed by disciples of Gustave Eiffel for the Gor-Gorfe railway line, it was relocated to Dúrcal in the 1920s to carry the historic suburban tramway from Granada. Today, it serves as a scenic pedestrian walkway offering dizzying views down the river gorge.
Thermal Springs & River Hikes
- Baños de Urquízar (Thermal Springs): Two natural thermal springs (Baño Grande and Baño Chico) where mineral-rich waters bubble up year-round at a soothing 24°C, surrounded by weeping willows and wild herbs.
- Ruta de los Bolos (Dúrcal River Walk): An exhilarating summer aquatic hike following the river upstream through narrow rocky gorges, refreshing pools, and waterfalls.
- Peñón de los Moros: Ruined Moorish watchtower fortress perched high above the river gorge with expansive vistas.
Gastronomy & Visitor Access
Dúrcal is located directly off exit 157 of the A-44 highway (20 minutes from Granada). After exploring, enjoy classic valley tapas, fresh grilled meats, and traditional orange-infused pastries at local terraces along Plaza de España.
