Despite its name, Plaza Nueva is actually the oldest modern public square in Granada! Constructed in the early 16th century by vaulting over the Darro River with massive subterranean brick arches to create open urban space, it serves as the vibrant hinge connecting the Renaissance downtown with the medieval alleys of the Albaicín and the paths ascending the Alhambra hill.

1. Monuments on Plaza Nueva
- Real Chancillería (High Court): The imposing 1587 Mannerist stone judicial palace.
- Iglesia de Santa Ana: A beautiful 1537 Mudéjar Pfarrkirche with an ornate brick bell tower.
- Pilar del Toro: An ancient stone drinking fountain sculpted by Diego de Siloé featuring a carved bull’s head.
2. The Transit & Walking Crossroads
Plaza Nueva is where everyone meets. From here, you can:
- Board the red city microbuses C31, C32, and C34 to the Albaicín, Alhambra, and Sacromonte.
- Start the romantic stroll down Carrera del Darro.
- Walk up the steep cobblestone switchbacks of Cuesta de Gomérez through the lush Alhambra woods.
