Perched on the tranquil slopes of the Sabika hill, just steps beneath the Alhambra’s towers and adjacent to the Carmen de los Mártires, lies one of Granada’s most intimate cultural sanctuaries: the Casa-Museo Manuel de Falla.
From 1921 until 1939, this modest traditional carmen (Granadino villa with an orchard garden) was home to Don Manuel de Falla, Spain’s greatest 20th-century classical composer. Here, amidst the whispering cypress trees and singing birds of the Alhambra woods, Falla composed immortal masterworks such as Noches en los jardines de España (Nights in the Gardens of Spain), El retablo de maese Pedro, and his monumental choral work Atlántida.
1. A Window into Falla’s Austere, Devout Life
Unlike the grandeur of the neighboring Alhambra palaces, Falla chose to live with radical simplicity and deep Franciscan piety. The carmen has been meticulously preserved with 100% original furniture and decor:
- The Composer’s Piano: The legendary upright piano on which Falla composed his masterpieces and performed for friends such as Federico García Lorca, Igor Stravinsky, and poet Juan Ramón Jiménez.
- His Private Study: Complete with his music stands, tuning forks, spectacles, handwritten scores, and fountain pens.
- The Bedroom: Stark and monkish, featuring his simple wooden bed, devotional crucifix, and minimal personal possessions.
- The Carmen Garden & Courtyard: A quintessential Andalusian patio with potted geraniums, climbing jasmine, and breathtaking panoramic views over the Vega valley and Sierra Nevada.
2. Visitor Information & Opening Hours (2026)
- Location: Paseo de los Mártires, s/n (near the Hotel Alhambra Palace).
- Opening Hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 (guided tours every 45 minutes). Closed Sundays and Mondays.
- Ticket Price: General admission ~3.00 €; Reduced rate (students/pensioners) ~1.00 €.
- How to Reach: Catch the Alhambra bus C30 or C32 from Plaza Isabel la Católica and alight at the Alhambra Palace Hotel stop; the carmen is a 2-minute stroll away.
