Located on the northern outskirts of the city, the Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (La Cartuja) appears unassuming from the outside. But stepping across its threshold reveals one of the most astonishing, opulent, and overwhelming displays of late Baroque and Churrigueresque architecture in the Western world.
1. The Sagrario (Sanctuary of the Blessed Sacrament)
Designed by master Francisco Hurtado Izquierdo, the Sagrario is a dazzling marble explosion of dynamic polychrome jasper, gilded Corinthian columns, and floating stucco angels bathed in golden natural light pouring from concealed skylights. At the center stands an intricate tabernacle carved from Lanjarón and Tortosa marbles.
2. The Sacristy: The White Jewel Box
Widely considered the supreme masterpiece of Spanish baroque interior decoration, the Sacristy is covered from floor to vaulted ceiling in an intricate, continuous lace of pure white stucco scrolls, acanthus leaves, and cherubs, contrasted against dark mahogany and cedar wood closets inlaid with silver, tortoiseshell, and mother-of-pearl.
