Granada’s central railway station, officially named Estación de Granada (popularly known as Estación del Carmen), is located on Avenida de Andaluces, right in the center of the city and within walking distance of the university district and Gran Vía.
Following a monumental modernization project that brought the AVE high-speed rail line into the city, Granada is now seamlessly linked to Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Malaga at speeds exceeding 300 km/h. Here is your practical 2026 railway guide.
1. High-Speed AVE & Avant Rail Connections
- AVE Granada – Madrid Puerta de Atocha: 3 to 4 direct daily high-speed trains making the journey in just 3 hours and 15 minutes, with intermediate stops in Antequera, Cordoba, and Ciudad Real.
- Avant Granada – Seville Santa Justa: Fast regional express trains covering the distance in 2 hours and 25 minutes, stopping at Loja, Antequera, and Osuna.
- Avant Granada – Malaga María Zambrano: Direct connection in just 1 hour and 10 minutes.
- AVE Granada – Barcelona Sants: Direct daily high-speed service traversing Spain diagonally in approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes.
2. Station Facilities and Security Screening
As with all major Spanish high-speed rail stations, passengers boarding AVE and Avant trains must pass through a standard luggage X-ray security check before entering the platforms. Allow at least 20 minutes before train departure.
- Customer Service & Ticketing: Renfe customer service desks and multiple multilingual self-service ticket vending machines.
- Car Rental Desks: Major international rental companies (Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Sixt) have offices either inside the terminal concourse or directly opposite on Avenida de Andaluces.
- Cafes & Snacks: Modern cafeteria and snack bars serving coffee, pastries, and sandwiches.
3. Public Transit Connections from the Station
- Metro de Granada: The Ferrocarril underground metro station has a direct elevator and stair connection straight onto the railway platform esplanade.
- City Buses: Lines 4, 8, 11, 21, and 33 have stops on Avenida de la Constitución, just a 3-minute flat walk from the station exit.
- Walking to Downtown: A leisurely 15 to 20-minute walk down the tree-lined Avenida de la Constitución and Gran Vía brings you straight to Granada Cathedral.
