The Palacios Nazaríes (Nasrid Palaces) represent the pinnacle of Islamic palatine architecture on Earth. Constructed primarily during the 14th century by Sultans Yusuf I and Muhammad V, this complex was the private royal residence and executive government center of the Nasrid dynasty.
1. The Three Distinct Palaces
- The Mexuar: The administrative audience chamber where ministers met and petitions were heard. Features tiled prayer niches overlooking the Darro canyon.
- The Comares Palace: The official residence of the sultan. Centered around the serene reflecting pool of the Court of the Myrtles, it culminates in the soaring Hall of the Ambassadors with its celestial 8,017-piece cedar dome.
- The Palace of the Lions (Palacio de los Leones): The private family quarters. 124 slender white marble columns encircle the central fountain with its 12 sculpted stone lions, flanked by the Hall of the Abencerrages and the Hall of the Two Sisters with their breathtaking honeycomb muqarnas star vaults.
2. Strict Time-Slot Rule
Access to the Nasrid Palaces is strictly regulated by the exact time printed on your Alhambra General ticket. You must be in the queue at the Puerta del Vino/Palacio de Carlos V entrance during your designated 30-minute window.
