1. Strategic Defensive Sluice Gate

Built in the 11th century by the Zirid kings, this fortified stone bridge featured a massive horseshoe arch equipped with heavy wooden portcullis timbers (tableros). In times of military siege, the sluice gates could be dropped to dam the river water or prevent enemy soldiers from infiltrating into the city through the riverbed.
