For lovers of Spanish literature, poetry, and theater, the Huerta de San Vicente ↗ is hallowed ground. Located inside the peaceful Parque Federico García Lorca on the southern edge of central Granada, this preserved country farmhouse served as the summer residence of the García Lorca family between 1926 and 1936.
It was within these whitewashed walls and fragrant gardens that Spain’s most celebrated 20th-century poet penned some of his greatest literary masterworks, including Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding), Yerma, Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads), and El Diván del Tamarit, before he was tragically executed at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
1. What You Will See Inside the House
The house-museum retains its authentic 1930s rural charm, filled with original furniture, personal belongings, and works of art preserved exactly as Federico left them:
- Federico’s Bedroom and Desk: The simple wooden desk where Lorca wrote by the window overlooking the orchards of the Vega of Granada.
- The Concert Grand Piano: Lorca was an accomplished pianist and composer; here he played folk songs and duets with his close friend and mentor Manuel de Falla.
- Original Drawings & Letters: Sketches by Lorca himself alongside original personal artwork and dedications gifted by his friends Salvador Dalí and Rafael Alberti.
- Original Gramophone and Records: The vintage gramophone on which Lorca listened to classical music, cante jondo flamenco, and New York jazz recordings.
2. The Surrounding Parque Federico García Lorca
The estate is now enveloped by a lush public municipal park featuring extensive rose gardens, weeping willows, a large duck pond, fountains, and wide shaded walking avenues. It is an idyllic spot for a tranquil afternoon picnic or family walk away from tourist crowds.
