Perched high on the rugged slopes of the Valparaíso hill overlooking the Darro River canyon, El Sacromonte is one of the most eccentric, romantic, and historically fascinating neighborhoods in the world. 1. The case grotta (case grotta (casas cueva)) (Las Cuevas del Sacromonte)

Beginning in the 16th century following the Christian Reconquest, marginalized Roma and Moorish populations settled on the steep hillsides outside the city walls. They carved dwellings directly into the soft clay and rock terrain (conglomerado).

These caves are natural thermal marvels: their thick earthen walls maintain an almost constant temperature of 18°C to 20°C (64°F–68°F) year-round, staying naturally cool during scorching Andalusian summers and warm during snowy winters.

2. The Zambra Flamenca: An Intimate Spectacle

Unlike large theater-stage flamenco, the Zambra is an intimate, raw, and hypnotic dance ritual originally performed at traditional gypsy weddings. Inside copper-potted, whitewashed caves, spectators sit just inches from dancers whose barefoot footwork and emotional singing resonate directly against the stone walls.

• Cueva de María la Canastera: One of the most historic and authentic zambras, celebrated by kings, Hollywood stars, and flamenco aficionados since the 1950s.
• Cueva Los Tarantos: Famous for its passionate ensemble of vocalists, guitarists, and dancers.
• Venta El Gallo: Boasts a scenic terrace with spectacular views of the illuminated Alhambra palaces.

3. Abadía del Sacromonte (The Abbey)

At the highest peak of the mountain stands the monumental 17th-century Abadía del Sacromonte. Built following the discovery of relics of San Cecilio and the mystical Lead Books, visitors can tour the subterranean Holy Caves (Santas Cuevas), cloistered courtyards, and a museum holding works by Goya and ancient Arabic manuscripts.
