Deep within the dramatic southern amphitheater of Sierra Nevada lies the breathtaking Barranco de Poqueira (Poqueira Gorge), home to three of the most perfectly preserved and enchanting white villages in Spain: Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira. Clinging to the sheer mountainside one above the other like stepping stones towards the sky, these three UNESCO-protected villages represent the true architectural and cultural soul of La Alpujarra.
1. The Unique Berber Architecture of the Alpujarra
When Moorish refugees settled these steep slopes over a thousand years ago, they constructed villages identical to those in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco:
- Flat Clay Roofs (Terraos): Covered in waterproof gray magnesian clay (launa), designed to catch mountain snow and insulate the stone houses from extreme temperatures.
- Tinaos: Covered semi-private beam-and-slate passageways that bridge across cobblestone streets between houses, creating shaded tunnels.
- Turban Chimneys: Distinctive cylindrical chimneys topped with a flat slate stone and a rock to prevent strong winds and snow from entering the hearth.
2. Exploring the Three Villages
A. Pampaneira (Elevation 1,060m)
The lowest and liveliest of the three. Centered around its picturesque plaza, Pampaneira is renowned for artisan loom workshops producing handwoven wool rugs (jarapas), artisanal chocolate boutiques (Abuela Ili), and traditional taverns.
B. Bubión (Elevation 1,300m)
The quietest and most tranquil gem. Houses the Casa-Museo Alpujarreña, an authentic ethnographic museum demonstrating historical rural domestic life, wine presses, and olive mills.
C. Capileira (Elevation 1,436m)
The highest village, perched at the very threshold of the Sierra Nevada National Park. Capileira serves as the primary base camp for hikers ascending Mulhacén (3,479m), the highest mountain peak on the Iberian Peninsula. Its cliffside viewpoints offer vertigo-inducing vistas straight down the gorge towards the Mediterranean.
3. The Poqueira Gorge Circular Hiking Trail (PR-A 70)
The best way to experience all three villages is on foot. The PR-A 70 hiking path connects Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira on a scenic 9.5 km circular trail that crosses ancient stone packhorse bridges, babbling mountain streams, chestnut groves, and abandoned watermills (approx. 3.5 to 4 hours round trip).
