Facing the dramatic vertical towers of the Alhambra from across the river valley, the Museo Cuevas del Sacromonte ↗ (Centro de Interpretación Etnográfico) is an extraordinary open-air museum dedicated to preserving the history, culture, and traditional way of life of the cave-dwelling communities of Granada.
Spread across 11 authentically preserved whitewashed case grotta (case grotta (casas cueva)) hollowed out from the geological clay hills of the Barranco de los Negros, this museum offers an unforgettable educational journey into the 500-year history of Granada’s Roma (Gypsy) community, their artisan crafts, and the birth of Zambra flamenco.
1. The 11 Restored Cave Exhibitions
Each cave dwelling showcases a different facet of historical troglodyte daily life:
- The Domestic Family Caves: Complete with iron beds, antique lace curtains, whitewashed rock alcoves, corner hearths, and traditional cooking pots.
- The Stable Cave (Cuadra): How mules, donkeys, and farm animals were kept inside warm subterranean stables beneath the living quarters.
- Traditional Artisan Trades: Dedicated caves demonstrating historic trades including calderería (hand-hammered copper craft), cestería (esparto grass basket weaving), and wrought iron forge work.
- History of the Zambra Flamenca: Archival photographs, costumes, castanets, and recordings explaining the unique flamenco singing and barefoot dancing that originated in the Sacromonte wedding caves.
2. Spectacular Alhambra Views
Beyond the museum’s historical displays, its botanical nature path and open terraces boast arguably the most breathtaking, unobstructed panoramic view of the entire Alhambra complex and the Darro river gorge. It is one of the premier photography spots in Granada, far less crowded than the bustling Mirador de San Nicolás.
