Crowning the Mauror hill right beside the Hotel Alhambra Palace and overlooking the entire city, the Fundación Rodríguez-Acosta is one of the most enigmatic, avant-garde, and visually arresting cultural landmarks in Andalusia. Constructed between 1916 and 1930 by celebrated painter José María Rodríguez-Acosta, it represents a visionary synthesis of Modernism, Symbolism, and classical Mediterranean antiquity.
1. The Architectural Marvel: A White Acropolis
Unlike traditional Granadino cármenes, Rodríguez-Acosta created a tiered white palace reminiscent of an ancient Greek acropolis. It features pristine white colonnades, terraces lined with classical statues, hanging wisteria gardens, and geometric cypress alleys.
2. The Secret Subterranean Crypts & Galleries
The highlight of the guided tour is descending into the underground subterranean labyrinth: a network of cool rock-cut tunnels, vaults, and secret crypts dug into the mountain, decorated with antique sculptures, Moorish pottery, and mystical symbolism.
