Hidden down a bustling street just off Calle Reyes Católicos in the downtown center, the Corral del Carbón is an extraordinary survival of medieval Moorish urban architecture. Built in 1336 by Sultan Yusuf I, it is the only completely preserved Nasrid alhóndiga (merchant caravanserai) on the entire Iberian Peninsula.
1. The Monumental Horseshoe Portal
Before stepping inside, gaze up at the magnificent ceremonial entrance gateway. Featuring a soaring horseshoe arch framed by intricate plaster muqarnas, geometric tile rosettes, and carved Kufic Arabic inscriptions declaring “God is Unique”, it is one of the finest facades of Nasrid art outside the Alhambra ↗.
2. The Interior Courtyard & History
Inside, three tiers of wooden galleries surround a square central stone courtyard with an ancient drinking trough for pack mules. Originally serving as a secure warehouse and inn for visiting foreign silk and spice merchants, it later functioned as a grain store, coal depot (earning its modern name ‘Carbón’), and theater playhouse (corral de comedias).
Admission: Completely free of charge daily.
