Tucked between the rugged coastal cliffs of Gualchos and Castell de Ferro, Cala La Rijana is unanimously acclaimed as the most enchanting, unspoiled wild cove on Granada’s Costa Tropical ↗. Sheltered by dramatic limestone promontories crowned by the ruins of an ancient Moorish watchtower, its translucent turquoise waters and rich marine life make it a Mediterranean paradise for swimmers, paddleboarders, and snorkelers.
Beach Features & Marine Life
Unlike crowded urban resort beaches, Cala La Rijana has preserved its natural, wild character:
- Beach Surface: Fine dark shingles and pebbles (wearing water shoes / escarpines is highly recommended).
- Water Quality: Exceptionally calm, crystalline, and clean. Visibility often exceeds 15 meters, making it one of Andalusia’s premier spots for snorkeling.
- Marine Fauna: Explore sea caves and submerged reefs teeming with octopuses, sea bream, starfish, anemones, and schools of colorful damselfish.
- Moorish Watchtower: Overlooking the cove stands the historic Torre de la Rijana, built during the Nasrid era to defend the coast from pirate raids.
Como Chegar & Parking Tips 2026
Cala La Rijana is located right off the scenic coastal highway N-340 at kilometer 353, between Calahonda and Castell de Ferro:
- From Granada: Take the A-44 highway south to the coast, merge onto the A-7 toward Almería, take the Calahonda exit, and continue along the N-340. Total drive: about 55 minutes.
- Parking Area: There is a designated dirt parking lot on the mountain side of the N-340. In July and August, it fills up by 10:30 AM, so arrive early!
- Pedestrian Access: From the parking lot, an illuminated pedestrian tunnel passes safely underneath the highway, followed by a gentle 5-minute paved ramp down to the beach.
Services & Practical Advice
During the summer season (June to September), a wooden eco-chiringuito operates on the beach serving cold drinks, grilled sardines (espetos), and renting paddle surfboards. Lifeguards are on duty during daytime hours. Bring your own beach umbrella and snorkeling gear!
