Crowning the highest rocky promontory overlooking the Mediterranean, Castillo de San Miguel (San Miguel Castle) is the historic defensive shield of Almuñécar. Occupied continuously for over 2,500 years by Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths, Moorish sultans, and Christian monarchs, its fortified walls offer the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Costa Tropical, surrounding coves, and the emerald valleys of chirimoya fruit trees.

Fortress History: From Nasrid Stronghold to Coastal Fortress

Originally a Phoenician watchtower, the fortress was heavily expanded during the Roman era. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Nasrid kings of Granada transformed it into a royal palace and military bastion with 46 defensive towers, underground dungeons, and secret escape tunnels leading to the beach. Following the Christian Reconquest in 1489, King Charles I (Emperor Charles V) added a deep moat, drawbridge, and massive artillery bastions.

• Combined Admission: €4.00 (includes entry to the Cueva de Siete Palacios Archaeological Museum). Reduced fee: €2.00.
• Opening Times: Open Tuesday through Saturday morning and late afternoon; Sunday mornings. Closed Mondays.
