Standing proudly at the intersection of Calle Elvira and the university district, the monumental Puerta de Elvira (Bab Ilbira) was the historic main entrance gateway into the fortified Moorish city of Granada. Built in the 11th century under the Zirid dynasty and expanded in the 14th century by Sultan Yusuf I, it is the oldest surviving city gate in Granada.
1. Architecture: The Grand Horseshoe Arch
The surviving monumental stone structure features a soaring horseshoe arch of solid stone masonry crowned by battlements. In medieval times, this gate was part of an impenetrable barbican fortress complex with defensive iron gates, four flanking towers, and a winding drawbridge access.
2. Gateway to Calle Elvira
Passing under the arch leads directly into Calle Elvira, Granada’s historic bohemian street filled with Moorish tea shops (teterías), craft boutiques, leather markets, and lively tapas taverns stretching all the way to Plaza Nueva.
