Perched high on the crest of Mount Valparaíso overlooking the Darro gorge and the northern slopes of the Alhambra stands the monumental 17th-century Abadía del Sacromonte (Sacromonte Abbey). As the spiritual birthplace of Christian Granada, this sanctuary holds centuries of deep religious devotion, archaeological controversy, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
1. The Holy Caves (Santas Cuevas)
Descend underground into the subterranean catacombs where the relics and ashes of San Cecilio, Granada’s first bishop and martyr, were unearthed in 1595. The whitewashed underground chapels retain a mystical atmosphere, featuring small altars and the famous dark ‘miracle stone’.
2. The Lead Books of Sacromonte (Plomos)
Alongside the relics, excavators discovered circular lead plates inscribed in mystical Arabic and Latin script that claimed to bridge Christian theology with Islamic prophecy. Though later declared apocryphal by the Vatican in 1682, these Plomos del Sacromonte remain one of the most intriguing cultural mysteries in Spanish history.
