Commissioned by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand in 1504 following their conquest of the city, the Hospital Real (Royal Hospital) was designed to care for wounded soldiers, pilgrims, and the poor. Today, this monumental square complex stands as the dignified administrative headquarters and Rectorate of the University of Granada (UGR).
1. The Four Internal Courtyards
The building follows a Greek-cross floor plan with an open cruciform lantern at its center, dividing the interior into four distinct, elegant stone cloisters:
- Patio de los Mármoles: Featuring slender white Macael marble columns.
- Patio de la Capilla: Dominated by monumental stone staircases.
- Patio de los Inocentes: Historically reserved for psychiatric patients.
- Patio del Archivo: Leading to the historic royal archives.
2. The General Library
On the upper floor of the central cruciform hall sits the University General Library, housing over 20,000 rare incunabula, illuminated manuscripts, and centuries-old leather-bound volumes under historic carved coffered ceilings.
