Spreading downhill from the southern gardens of the Alhambra to the riverbanks of the Genil, El Realejo is Granada’s historic Jewish quarter (originally known during the Muslim era as Garnata al-Yahud). Today, it is one of the most vibrant, artistic, and relaxed neighborhoods in the city—where ancient Sephardic heritage meets modern bohemian culture and world-class street art.

1. Highlights of El Realejo

  • Campo del Príncipe: The lively central square of the neighborhood. Shaded by trees and dominated by the 17th-century stone statue of the Cristo de los Favores, the square is lined with traditional open-air tapas bars where locals gather for long sunny lunches.
  • Street Art by Raúl Ruiz (El Niño de las Pinturas): Realejo is famous as an open-air modern art gallery. World-renowned graffiti artist Raúl Ruiz has decorated walls, doorways, and brick facades throughout the quarter with emotive portraits and philosophical poetry.
  • Casa de los Tiros: A fortified 16th-century palace built by the Granada-Venegas family. Look up at its famous Cuadra Dorada (Golden Room) featuring an intricately carved polychrome wooden ceiling decorated with portraits of Spanish kings and heroes.
  • Palacio de los Condes de Gabia: A stunning 17th-century aristocratic mansion now serving as a contemporary cultural arts exhibition center.
  • Carmen de los Mártires: Perched high above Realejo at the edge of the Alhambra hill, this 7-hectare romantic garden features resident peacocks, British and French formal gardens, a tranquil lake, and breathtaking panoramic views over the city.

2. Tapas and Gastronomy in Realejo

Realejo is celebrated for having some of Granada’s most innovative culinary scenes. From traditional fried fish taverns to modern vermouth bars along Calle Santa Escolástica and Calle Molinos, it offers a quieter, more authentic alternative to tourist-heavy downtown streets.
