Dominating the northern edge of Plaza Nueva, the imposing Real Chancillería (Royal Chancery) was established in 1505 by the Catholic Monarchs as the supreme court of justice for all of Southern Spain and Spanish overseas territories south of the Tagus River.
1. Renaissance Monumental Architecture
Completed in 1587, its solemn Mannerist stone facade is attributed to master Francisco del Castillo. Admire the marble portal crowned by allegorical statues of Justice and Fortitude and the monumental royal coat of arms of Philip II.
Inside, the central courtyard—designed by Diego de Siloé—features two tiers of Doric columns surrounding a central fountain, creating a space of dignified judicial gravitas. Today, it serves as the seat of the High Court of Justice of Andalusia (TSJA).
