Perched dizzyingly at 1,436 meters altitude at the very head of the Poqueira Gorge, Capileira (from Latin capillaria, meaning ‘highest point’) is the uppermost and most dramatic of the three iconic white villages of the gorge. With its maze of steep whitewashed alleys, flowering balconies, traditional launa roofs, and unparalleled vistas looking straight up to the peaks of Mulhacén and Veleta, Capileira is a mountain wonderland.
O que ver em Capileira
- igreja paroquial of Santa María de la Cabeza: Constructed in the 16th century in Mudéjar style, featuring an impressive gilded altarpiece and a quiet plaza with views across the ravine.
- Barrio del Castillo & Traditional Tinaos: Wander up to the oldest quarter to admire the purest examples of Alpujarreño architecture: flat clay roofs, wooden beam porticos (tinaos), and narrow stone gutters.
- The Viewpoints (Miradores): Don’t miss Mirador de San Sebastián (looking south across Bubión and Pampaneira down to the sea) and Mirador del Perchel.
- Pedro Antonio de Alarcón Ethnographic Museum: Showcasing 19th-century mountain life, tools, local costumes, and the personal artifacts of the celebrated Spanish travel writer.
Top Hiking Routes Starting from Capileira
- Sendero a La Cebadilla (PR-A 69): A glorious 8-km circular hike along the upper Poqueira riverbed to the abandoned hydroelectric village of La Cebadilla, crossing ancient stone bridges and cascading mountain streams.
- Barranco de Poqueira Circular (PR-A 70): Descend down the gorge to Bubión and Pampaneira, returning along the western cliffs.
- Summit Gateway to Mulhacén: Capileira is the official base for the high-mountain summer shuttle (SIAC Sur) heading up toward Mulhacén peak.
Onde Comer: Traditional Mountain Cuisine
Capileira has some of the finest restaurants in the Alpujarra. Savor local mountain stews, garlic kid goat (choto al ajillo), and grilled pork loin with caramelised chestnuts at Restaurante El Fondon, Mesón Poqueira, or La Taha.
